A Tenant’s Guide to a Smooth Move-In
A great rental experience begins with clear expectations and practical communication. A few small steps in the first week can help residents protect their home and avoid unnecessary stress later.
A simple move-in checklist
- Walk through and document. Take dated photos of every room and note any existing wear on your move-in condition report.
- Set up utilities. Confirm which ones are in your name and schedule service to start on move-in day.
- Test the basics. Check smoke alarms, locks, faucets, HVAC and appliances, and report anything that is not working.
- Confirm your keys. Make sure you have every key, fob, garage remote and mailbox key you should.
- Save the contacts. Know how to submit a maintenance request and who to call in an emergency.
- Read your lease. Pets, parking, yard care and filter changes are often spelled out there.
When something is unclear, ask
Always start with your lease and the property’s specific instructions. When something is unclear, ask your management team in writing rather than making assumptions. Take photos when appropriate, communicate issues in writing and keep important contact information easy to find. A timely report can make a meaningful difference for both residents and owners.
